Keir Starmer has hoisted Boris Johnson by his own petard by using the Tories’ 2019 general election election slogan against him in a new set of Facebook ads.
In one execution Labour have accused the Conservatives of “reopening old Brexit divides” through their shambolic handling of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.
In another it argues the Prime Minister needs to get on with Brexit so that he can focus on dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is seriously smart.
To stand a good chance of winning a general election, Starmer needs to bring back people who consistently voted Labour before the EU referendum in 2016 but have voted Conservative, UKIP or the Brexit Party ever since.
The last 5 years has proven beyond reasonable doubt that there is not enough pro-EU, social and economic liberals in Britain – who consistently turnout to vote – to win a majority in the House of Commons.
By focusing on the Tories terrible management of the process of leaving the EU, rather than continuing to contest the decision to leave, Starmer is cleverly accepting he lost the war so that he can win the peace.
This line of attack also contributes to Labour’s dominant narrative which is around Conservative incompetence (as opposed to ideological or policy-based opposition).
H/T to Steve Armstrong for bringing this ad to my attention
