Trump has announced he’ll run in the 2024 Republican Party Presidential Primary.
The most interesting thing about his speech was the insertion of the word “glorious” in between “make America great” and “again”.
The polling suggests that Trump remains popular amongst Republican voters.
And the fact he’s announced early will make life hard for other potential candidates.
Trump can now openly start trying to sew up endorsements, donors and supporters before others have worked out if they’ll run.
The more time he has unopposed the harder it will be for new entrants to catch-up.
Those considering running will now need to make quick progress, which adds pressure and increases the likelihood of mistakes.
For those candidates who’ve recently had to focus on their own midterm reelection (like Ron DeSantis), the notion of going straight into a Presidential primary is particularly daunting.
The problem that arises out of an early start is maintaining momentum.
Trump has never struggled to generate attention. But even The Donald may find it difficult to make a third presidential bid seem interesting for three reasons.
First, Trump never really left the stage after the conclusion of the second act. This makes it less likely people will be yearning for his return.
Second, his absence from Twitter makes it’s harder for him to steer the media narrative. Whilst people love to deride Elon Musk’s latest acquisition, as a tool for influencing journalists, it’s hard to beat.
And finally, whilst his announcement speech makes clear that he intends to run using an outsider narrative, that’s not easy to do when you have a recent record in government to defend.
