I love the fact that Labour’s parliamentary primary election process is now taking place in full view of the public via the new trend for candidates to share bio videos on social media.
Primary elections are so important in a democracy; voters at a general election can only choose from the candidates on the ballot paper.
The public are dependent on primary voters to give them a decent option at the general election.
In some seats, the primary process will de facto decide the MP. In such cases the primary election is often more competitive than the general election.
As Michael Crick has pointed out on his excellent Tomorrow’s MPs Twitter account the current Labour primary process will – more than most – shape the country’s future.
These bio videos give the primary voters – members of a given constituency Labour Party – more information, but will also be overheard by the general election audience. More information at elections is always good for democracy.
For example, the selection process for Wycombe is underway. It’s highly winnable as 2019 Tory majority is 4,214 (7.7%) and it moved towards Lab last time. Here are four of the candidates:
Good luck to all the candidates!
Interesting stuff. Hadn’t really grasped just how important these ‘primary’ elections are in shaping the future of UK political parties.
