Ron DeSantis, a likely Republican Party Presidential candidate and the current Governor of Florida, has released a new Top Gun-themed advert which takes aim at the “corporate media”.
It’s a clever ad on two levels.
Firstly, using the year’s biggest film as a theme is good idea because it (a) guarantees that the ad is going to go viral and (b) reminds voters about his past service in the US Navy.
Secondly, in attacking the “corporate media” DeSantis is positioning himself in a very similar way to Trump at his best.
This ad reminds me of a meme-style graphic that Donald Trump shared online which I felt spoke to the essence of Trump’s popularity.

It featured a picture of Trump with a tough guy expression looking straight down the barrel of the camera and carried the headline “in reality they’re not after me they’re after you, I’m just in the way.”
The idea of a President that was strong enough to protect blue collar America from the onslaught of the liberal consensus – embodied in many cases by the “corporate media” – was deeply persuasive for lots of people.
This Ron DeSantis ad is straight from the Trump training manual.
DeSantis will be taking on Charlie Crist, the candidate elected in yesterday’s Democratic Primary in Florida, for the governorship of the sunshine state.
It’s going to be a dogfight.
Good article esp final morsel!
