Welcome to another episode of Target Talk.
The primary election to replace the SNP’s leader is underway and there are three candidates on the ballot: Humza Yousaf, Kate Forbes and Ash Regan.
There is an excellent piece in today’s Sunday Times – by Alex Massie, Tom Calver and illustrated by Nina Krause – on the voters the candidates need to win over. The whole article is worth reading but here’s the three bits that I found most interesting:
1/ The SNP membership is vast. Its 104,000 members equates to 2.4 per cent of the Scottish electorate. This is a significantly higher proportion of the population than Labour, Conservatives or Lib Dems have signed up amongst their electorate.
2/ As it’s so large – and that the only thing members need to agree on is the desirability of an independent Scotland – it is a politically broad church. Massie believes there to be five main tribes: young eco warriors, public sector toilers, heartland farmers, oil echelons and metropolitan hipsters.

3/ It has the lowest percentage of the ABC1 demographic in its membership of any major party.
