Democrats use Instagram reels to help achieve reach

Instagram’s algorithm is aggressively favouring Reels to try and catch-up with TikTok.

If you post a reel on Instagram you’re more likely to reach more people than if you stick a static on your main grid or post something on Stories.

The Democrats know this and so are using reels to try and reach more voters in the buildup to the midterm elections which are less than a month away.

Here’s four reels that have caught my eye:

President Biden

First up: Biden using the Capitol Riots as a way to be authentically pro-police and also remind people of when Republicans did a Very Bad Thing.

Mark Kelly

Former astronaut and Democratic senator Mark Kelly is defending his seat in Arizona against Blake Masters, a Trump-backed novice.

Kelly very successfully makes the lesser known Master relatable in a bad way. He basically says “you know that annoying person you’re acquainted with or who you hate-follow online? This guy is just like that”.

VP Harris

The Dems are in many ways trying to make the midterms a referendum on abortion rights.

It’s an emotive issue that should help turnout.

Here’s Kamala making the case very persuasively.

Secretary Pete

And finally here’s Secretary (of Transportation) Pete talking about culverts.

I had never heard this term before watching this video.

It’s a great word.

And I found the film as a whole weirdly meditative and enriching.
