Conservative Party Election Broadcast – The People v.s. Gordon Brown

The Conservative Party have released a new party election broadcast, featuring a barrister cross-examining Gordon Brown for his supposed crimes against the electorate.  It’s a nice idea and the film is well executed with very high production values.

In terms of the strategy, at this stage in the race I’m not convinced that voters need reminding of Gordon’s faults but instead need an excuse to vote for Cameron.

Hung Parliament Party

The Conservative Party have launched ‘The Hung Parliament Party’.  The Tories openly admit that they are no longer competing against the Labour Party but instead against the possibility of a hung parliament.  The Conservatives are obviously fearful that public perception of the possibility of a hung parliament is positive and are doing what they can to try and convince us otherwise.

I’m not sure creating a fake political party was the best creative vehicle for this campaign.  People are overwhelming turned off by political parties, so why create a new one to dislike?

Conservative poster – Brown depicted as Vicky Pollard

The Conservative Party have released a new poster accusing Brown of misleading the electorate over Tory policy on pensioners’ benefits.  Cameron raised the issue during last night’s leaders debate.

Whilst the speed of the release of the poster is impressive, perhaps they should have spent a bit more time crafting the headline, as anyone who didn’t watch the debate will be left completely cold as to what “dodgy leaflets” is referring to.

Gordon Brown looking like Vicky Pollard is funny though.

You’re Nicked!

David Schneider (of The Day Today and Alan Partridge  fame) has made a very funny piece of light political satire called ‘You’re Nicked’.  I’m not sure if the aim’s to take the piss out of Nick Clegg or David Cameron, but you finish watching the video feeling worse about both of them.

If nothing else, it shows that trying to stand for a ‘new politics’ requires a completely new vocabulary in order to avoid sounding like you’re dishing out empty rhetoric.

Conservative poster – Cut benefits for those who refuse work

The new Conservative Party poster is on the topic of reform of the welfare state.  It’s clear, simple and to the point.  Cameron is shot to look like a man of the people – open neck white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and surrounded by the electorate.  The poster communicates passion, energy and determination – all good things for a leader whose back is up against the wall.
